Start of our Apprentice Programme

Deerness Fencing & Landscaping recently welcomed two apprentice fencing operatives to the team.

New Apprenticeship Program for 2023

There is a ‘real buzz’ in the office around the new apprenticeship schemes on offer to both existing and new employees. As well as giving an apprentice a fantastic chance to continue learning and developing, both personally and professionally it is providing existing employees with an opportunity to supervise and mentor. A definite win-win for the business.

Over the last few years, we have found it difficult to recruit workers from a diverse range of backgrounds into the industry, we are hoping that promoting the Fencing Installer Apprenticeship will help to fill that skill gap in the current market and, also improve the length of time existing employees remain within the business and therefore the apprenticeship scheme is at the forefront of our recruitment strategy.

The Fencing Installer Apprenticeship Level 2 lasts up to 18 months, for experienced fencers, this can be a relatively quick process of just 2 or 3 site visits to confirm their skills and abilities. For those new to the industry this will take longer and enable them to learn and develop in the following areas: –

  • Follow the industry’s health & safety standards
  • Select the required materials and equipment
  • Establish the fence line
  • Excavate foundations for the fence
  • Install a post
  • Use power tools safely
  • Complete relevant industry standard paperwork

Team Leaders and 1st Line Managers Apprenticeship Level 3 lasts up to 18 months, offered for both staff and operational team leaders/supervisors currently aimed at helping to existing staff to develop new leadership and management knowledge, skills and behaviour.

Senior Managers & Decision Makers Apprenticeship Level 5 lasts up to 24 months, offered for both operational and departmental managers where existing employees can begin to understand the importance of becoming more self-aware of their behaviour and current level of performance and the impact of their behaviour on others and their performance.

Our Apprenticeship Program’s journey began with Lennon. Our very first Fencing Installer Apprentice. Together with our training provider, Group Horizon, Lennon is now being mentored by an existing fencer, Shane. There are many direct and indirect returns a business can achieve through apprenticeships and we are excited to see what the future holds for both Deerness Fencing and Lennon.
